1575 - Irenaeus' Classic Guide to Gnostic Heresy
Prior to the discovery of the Nag Hammadi Library our best insight into the various forms of ‘Gnosticism’ of the ancient world was the polemical textbook “Adversus haereses” or “Against Heresy" by the 2nd century bishop of Lyon, Irenaeus. And, despite its polemical nature, it remains an important source on the history of Gnosticism. Here we have a lovely and impressive 16th century Latin edition in beautiful folio. Indeed, this is a work of real erudition, having been corrected and improved from previous editions with better manuscripts as witnessed by the editor. Here we have the greatest catalog of early heretical movements including a range of gnostics and other ‘deviant’ forms of early Christianity. A necessary work for anyone interested in Gnosticism and a beautiful volume to boot.
