1680 - Renaissance Guide to Astrology
Andrea Argoli makes two appearances on our catalog. With his textbook of medical astrology, On Critical Days, we also have his famed introduction to astrology. This handsome volume is the classic textbook of Renaissance astrology in the form of a digest of Ptolemy’s Almagest. In this volume Argoli walks us through the basics of astrology from the signs of planets and the Zodiac all the way up to complicated topics near the end, including how to draw up a natal chart from scratch. Of course, there is also a fair amount of philosophy of astrology, especially concerning the role of fate such that judicial astrology does not contradict free will. For Argoli the sky “est sicut liber omnia futuro in se scripta continens,” is like a book in which all future things are written. As an antiquarian book this volume is lovely, with appropriate browning and lovely astrological charts throughout. A required volume for anyone interested in the history of astronomy / astrology
