Saint Teresa of Ávila is one of the towering figures in the Western mystical tradition. At the age of 20, despite her father's initial objections, Teresa entered the Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation in Ávila. Her early years as a nun were marked by recurring health issues and a sense of spiritual aridity. However, a profound transformation occurred in her 40s when she began experiencing a series of intense spiritual visions and encounters with the divine. One of Saint Teresa’s greatest visions is known as The Transverberation. This vision, central to Bernini's "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa," involved an angel piercing her heart with a fiery arrow, causing both immense pain and overwhelming spiritual ecstasy. Teresa described it as a feeling of being consumed by divine love, so intense it transcended physical sensation. Her autobiographical accounts and treatises like "The Interior Castle" and "The Way of Perfection" offer intimate and intense glimpses into the soul's journey towards divine union.

This volume is a lovely compilation of Teresa’s writings published by the Carmelites in the early 18th century. It also contains a number of delightful engravings portraying Saint Teresa at various stages of her spiritual journey.
