Hippolytus (c. 170-235 AD) was an important early Christian theologian and a fierce critic of Gnosticism. He delved into their secret rituals, symbols, and cosmologies in his Refutation of All Heresies, offering a rare glimpse into early Christian mysticism. Hippolytus' writings expose the hidden knowledge of Gnostic sects, revealing their esoteric beliefs and practices. He also demonstrated a keen interest in astrology and cosmology, weaving these concepts into his theological framework. Adding to his mystique, Hippolytus was a controversial figure who challenged the authority of the Roman bishops. He had something of a rebellious streak.

This volume contains, among other things, Hippolytus’ On The Antichrist, which is one of the earliest Christian writings focused entirely on the Antichrist. Written around 212 AD, it paints a vivid picture of the Antichrist's rise to power, his reign of terror, and his ultimate demise at the hands of Christ. Hippolytus draws heavily on biblical prophecy, particularly from the Book of Daniel and Revelation, to construct a detailed portrait of this apocalyptic figure.

This very rare volume also contains interesting tables, beautiful illustrations of ancient coins, Greek and Latin facing translations, and passages in Syriac.
